Principles and Foundations of Swordsmithing

This 12 week formal program will provide you with the necessary skills, techniques and knowledge to;

  • Design your own medieval sword using historical references and proportional theory

  • Learn the fundamentals of bladesmithing to forge sword blades, pommels and guards of varying size and design

  • Grind, file and polish all the necessary parts of your sword to achieve the standard of finish desired

  • Fully assemble and complete a sword as well as proper care and maintenance for it

Additionally, this program will provide the student with all the necessary equipment to forge and make swords in their own home-workshop.

This equipment includes: a forge, an anvil, hammer, tongs, 2x72 grinder, bench-vice, post-vice, file-set, glasses, and any additional equipment necessary for a student to begin working on their own. This equipment will be purchased for the student and belong to said student. The specifics regarding the equipment will be up to the students choice, although I will offer my best recommendations for what anvils, grinders, vices, etc. I believe are best!

This course will have weekly sessions where we will go through key principles of swordsmithing followed by homework for students to complete between class sessions at their home-workshop.

By the end of the 12 week program, the student will receive a certificate of completion of this course, additionally they as well get to keep all the swords they produced.
