I recently had a student approach me for a paper they were writing. I obliged and the questions they posed really got me thinking. I wanted to share a couple of the questions and responses. Please read and share your thoughts. Do you agree? Disagree? What has your experience with blacksmithing been?
What is your opinion about trends developing in the world of blacksmithing?
Blacksmithing is undergoing a resurgence among hobbyists. Due to the popularization of blacksmithing on YouTube and the History Channel, people are taking notice. Unfortunately it is suffering from misinformation and select popularization, like any other fad, instead of a true reconnection with the diversity of the industry and its wider applications.
How might those trends change in the next 10 years?
It is hard to say, if blacksmithing builds enough momentum and the market demand is there, then the industry may become a revitalized trade and find a place in the occupational field like heritage carpentry. However, if the focus does not shift from popular fixtures, such as knife and sword making and other minor aspects of the trade, then blacksmithing will grow stagnant with audiences quickly becoming bored.
